Four Questions on the Nation’s Soul

Picture: Andrea Schaffer

Recorded at the Mural Hall of Australia’s Parliament House for the Christian Schools Australia National Policy Conference, this was my most enjoyable keynote presentation for 2009. In it I examine social trends like Mind-Body-Spirit festivals, life coaching, voluntourism, ‘secular confessionals’ and more to discern four spiritual questions asked by today’s Australians:

  1. In a materialistic world, where can I find meaning?
  2. In a confusing world, where can I find guidance?
  3. In a broken world, where can I find liberation?
  4. In a lonely world, where can I find love?

I shared the stage that evening with then Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard and the audience included many well-known Senators and Members of Parliament, as well as educational executives from around Australia.

Given the context, this is a more ‘formal’ presentation. The talk has since been broadcast and adapted for a number of other keynote invitations. I hope you like it. You’ll find details on booking me to speak at your conference or event here.

Q: What signs do you see that ‘secular’ societies are looking for spiritual answers?
